Effective February 7, 2008, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education approved Oklahoma State University’s request to offer a new Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Engineering. The new degree is effective immediately.
Several years ago the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering began preparing for a new BS Degree in Computer Engineering (BS CpE) to replace the “Computer Option” that has been available under the BS Degree in Electrical Engineering for many years.
ECEN has always had a broad selection of courses in the “computer” area, but the hiring of three new Computer Engineering faculty members during the past couple of years has greatly enhanced our strength in the area. Several new courses have already been introduced and new areas of research have begun. You can expect more growth in the coming years.
The new CpE program is based very closely on the Computer Engineering curriculum recommended by IEEE/ACM so it should have broad acceptance and appeal.
Students currently in the Computer Option under the 2007-2008 degree plan can switch seamlessly to the new BS CpE degree program if they desire since the 2007-2008 “option” curriculum is identical to the new BS CpE requirements. You will need to see your advisor in order to make the change.
Students in the Computer Option under earlier degree plans (prior to 2007-2008) and closer to graduation may not find it suitable to switch since additional coursework might be needed to satisfy requirements for the new degree. This will have to be evaluated on a case by case basis. I encourage you to ask questions if you are interested in switching programs.
In the next few days more complete information on the new BS Degree in Computer Engineering will appear on the ECEN web site, as well as new Area of Specialization information for the BS degree in Electrical Engineering. I encourage you to take a look at it.
More information can be obtained from the CEAT Office of Student Services (405 744-5276), or from Ms. Helen Daggs (405 744-5151) or Mr. Ron Knight (918 594-8582) for those students already in Professional School.
