ECEN Faculty Received a Research Project from U.S. Department of Education

Recently, OSU received a research grant ($350,000) from U.S. Department of Education (DoE). The project is entitled Telecommunication & Virtual Lab Research and Development. Principal Investigators include Drs. Jong-Moon Chung and George Scheets (from ECEN, CEAT, OSU), and Ramesh Sharda, Mark Weiser, and Nicholas Romano (from MIS, College of Business, OSU). This project is focused on the enhancement of virtual presence technology, by increasing a remote user's ability to interact with distant equipment and users. The virtual presence tools propose to develop, called Virtual-Laboratory (VLab), seeks to improve same-time different-place group interactions, bringing them more on par with that of same-time, same place. The VLab will include: (1) The ability to seamlessly, virtually walkthrough a virtual, or real but remote location; (2) The ability to interact with hardware and remote users, in a manner not unlike that of a same-time same-place user; (3) The ability to find a remote instructor (or sales persons) location easily, interact with same, and see an over-the-shoulder visual image from the remote person's viewpoint, as well as conveniently be able to exchange real-time audio/video/data; (4) Record useful student/attendee/visitor information; and (5) The ability to manage and track complex multi-point video, audio, and data streams.
