Dr. Daqing Piao (PI), an assistant professor at ECEN, recently is awarded a grant by the Health Research Program of OCAST. Dr. Guolong Zhang (Animal Science, OSU) and Dr. Brian W Pogue are two Co-PIs in this project that is entitled as “Video-rate Endoscopic NIR tomography of Hemodynamics.”
The objective of this
research is to develop an innovative imaging technology that may benefit
in vivo detection of prostate cancer and improve the accuracy of
prostate biopsy. Near infrared (NIR) tomography has been recognized as
extremely sensitive to the increased microvessel density that is occurring
in tumor growth. However, the use of NIR tomography in cancer detection has
been limited for organs like breast where the tissue can have direct contact
with light sources and detectors. This research is to develop NIR tomography
at endoscopic scale to acquire high tumor-tissue contrast in internal organs
like prostate. The outcome would be “highlighting” the cancer region and
hence improving the accuracy of biopsy. If successful, this project could
establish an entirely new imaging device for endoscope-based tumor
diagnosis. |
