Dr. Gary G. Yen
Professor

Biography

Gary G. Yen received his Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana in 1992.  He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 1999 and has just been promoted to the rank of Professor in 2004 from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma.  Before he joined OSU in 1997, he was with the Structure Control Division, U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Albuquerque, NM where he was a technical lead in the effort of precision space structure platform.  His research at OSU has been generously supported by the DoD, DoE, EPA, NASA, NSF, OCAST and Process/Defense Industry.  His research interest includes intelligent control, computational intelligence, evolutionary optimization, conditional health monitoring, signal processing and their industrial/defense applications.

Dr. Yen was an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and the IEEE Control Systems Magazine during 1994-1999.  He is currently serving as an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, IFAC Journal on Automatica and International Journal of Computational Intelligence and Applications.  He served as the Program Chair for the 2000 IEEE Conference on Control Applications held in Anchorage, AK, was the General Chair for the 2003 IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control held in Houston, TX and will be the General Chair for the 2006 IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence to be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  On behalf of IEEE Robotic and Automation Society and later IEEE Control Systems Society, he was a Representative to the IEEE Neural Network Council Administrating Committee from 1995 to 2000.  He was an appointed member of the Board of Governor of the IEEE Control Systems Society in 2002.  Dr. Yen served as Chair for IEEE Control Systems Society Student Activities Standing Committee and Chair for IEEE Neural Network Council/Society Neural Network Technical Committee. He is currently serving as the Vice President for Technical Activities in the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society and Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE oNNectionS, the Newsletter for the IEEE Neural Network/Computational Intelligence Society.

Dr. Yen was recognized as 2003 Professor of the Year from OSU Chapter of Eta Kapp Nu Honor Society and is the recipient of Halliburton Outstanding Faculty Award in 2004.

Dr. Jong-Moon Chung
Associate Professor

Biography

Dr. Jong-Moon Chung is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Oklahoma State University (OSU). Dr. Chung also serves as the Director of the Advanced Communication Systems Engineering Laboratory (ACSEL) and the Oklahoma Communication Laboratory for Networking and Bioengineering (OCLNB) at OSU. Before coming to OSU, from 1997 to 1999 he worked as an Assistant Professor and Instructor in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Pennsylvania State University (University Park, Pennsylvania). His research has been in the area of communication engineering and information theory. He has worked on projects in mobile and satellite communications in the areas of information theory, error control coding, modulation technology, and also in the field of computer networking and data communications. His past research includes the research and development of the KORSAT-1 geo-stationary communication satellite and numerous error control coding algorithms, digital modulation schemes, and networking technologies for mobile communication devices.

Dr. Chung has been conducting research and development of advanced wireless communication devices and optical networking systems for the Department of Defense (DoD) (i.e., Air Force, DARPA, ONR, Navy), U.S. federal and state government (Homeland Security, OCAST, NPDC, ODOC, OWRB, and OSRHE), and industry (Halliburton, WilTel Communications, SBC, Shadowband Systems, Sciperio, Nomadics, LaLucha) in the area of wireless & wired communications and networking. These research projects applying GSM/GPRS, IS-54, IS-95, IS-136, IMT-2000, IEEE802.11 a/b/g wireless LAN, and Bluetooth technology, as well as IP, ATM, IEEE 802.3z, MPLS, and GMPLS networking technologies. Dr. Chung is also conducting research projects funded by the Department of Education (DoE) and Southwestern Bell, Inc. (SBC) in virtual laboratory development, and has also conducted projects for Williams Communications, Inc. (now WilTel Communications) on topics in MPLS network architecture modeling and optimization, and optical fiber network reliability, restoration, and survivability. The overall project funding Dr. Chung has been awarded and directed at the Oklahoma State University exceeds $4,000,000 (i.e., $ 4 million). Dr. Chung has published over 65 refereed articles in the top international journals and conferences.

Dr. Chung's paper on advanced mobile communication system error control coding that was presented at the IEEE EIT 2000 conference received the IEEE EIT 2000 Conference "The First Place" Outstanding Paper Award. In December of 2003, Dr. Chung was also awarded the Top Gun Award for Outstanding Leadership, Innovations, Research, and Development from Shadowband Systems, Inc. Additionally, in October of 2003, Dr. Chung was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Oklahoma State University. He is also included in the Who's Who in America (The Marquis Who's Who Publications) from the 58th edition and beyond.
