The ECEN department requires students to select an Area of Specialization (AoS) within electrical engineering.  Areas of Specialization allow students to gain depth in one area of electrical engineering, better matching their plan of study with appropriate courses and their academic advising with faculty of similar interests to create more coherent course offerings.

Areas of Specialization help students achieve a comprehensive education in electrical engineering that is aligned with interests and career directions.  Students must declare a specific AoS and develop a plan of study in consultation with ECEN faculty.  Advising is done at the area level by the faculty – not at the department level. Areas of Specialization leave unchanged the requirement for breadth at the junior level (the Junior Block), they are intended to provide guidance in selecting junior and senior electives.

All students must take:

1) Required university and engineering college courses (consult requirement sheet).

2) Required ECEN junior and senior level courses:

ECEN2011, ECEN3233, ECEN3021, ECEN3713, ENGL3323, ECEN3723, ECEN3113, ECEN3613, ECEN3913, ECEN3313, ECEN3031, IEM3503, ECEN3513, ECEN4013, ECEN4023, ECEN4503.

3)  Additional technical or ECEN electives NOT SPECIFIED must be chosen in consultation with and approved by area faculty.

4)  Students in Senior Design II (ECEN4023) will pursue a senior design project approved by the faculty in their area.
