Area Level Assessment
Assessments
used at the course level are listed below. Not all assessment metrics are
used in all courses. Instructor surveys are required in every course.
| Metric | Description | Status |
| Instructor Surveys | Two instructor surveys will be distributed. A pre-course survey will be distributed by faculty in each area of specialization to ensure the planned teaching schedule has adequate coverage. At the end of every semester each instructor will provide feedback on general student preparedness and coverage of specific teaching topics relevant to their area of specialization. General questions will focus on student preparation, student professionalism, and facilities. Design courses will additionally be surveyed for design content, and written and oral communication components. Each area will design questions based on required content and coverage, with guidance provided by the ECEN assessment committee. | Implemented Fall, 2002. |
| Juried Student Work | Each area of specialization is responsible for collecting artifacts of student work (homework, tests, etc.) and evaluating the quality of student work. These must be evaluated by a faculty committee using a rubric designed by the faculty in each area. | |
| Portfolios | The faculty in each area of specialization may require generation of student portfolios. These must be evaluated by a faculty committee using a rubric designed by each area and are especially useful for evaluating design project and written communication. | |
| Surveys | These include results of Student Assessment of Learning Gains as well as other surveys, some implemented by students. These surveys are designed to analyze a particular course or area of specialization.: Faculty may provide documentary evidence of learning gains through a SALG instrument. These will be standardized across the ECEN department. |
