Program
Level Assessments
The
assessment metrics utilized at the department level are summarized below.
Results of assessments where available are accessible through the links in the
left column.
| Metric | Description | Status |
| ECEN will use assessment funds to permit a self selected group of students to take the Fundamentals of Engineering professional examination each year. Results will be compared with national norms for specific areas covered within ECEN. The ECEN assessment committee will be responsible for identifying programmatic weaknesses relative to other engineering schools and assuring self-selection represents a valid cross-section of students. | Ongoing, data available. | |
| A standard student exit survey will be given each year by the assessment committee. The survey will be given in the senior design course or ECEN 4111 (future) and be required for all students. The survey will measure student attitudes and their overall experience in ECEN courses, the engineering core curriculum, and general education courses. Specifically questions will target outcomes 2, 4, and 5. | Ongoing. | |
| Student teams must submit portfolios of work and present a final oral presentation to an ECEN faculty jury. Both written and oral presentations will be evaluated using a rubric to be developed by the assessment committee. | Implemented Fall 2002. | |
|
Integrative Courses |
ECEN will develop three new one hour courses, ECEN 2111, 3111, 4111 based on the McMaster University model. These courses will teach critical thinking and serve to integrate knowledge across disciplines. Various assessment metrics will become integral parts of these courses. Specific assessment metrics will be determined as the courses are developed. | Under Discussion. |
| To ensure that all students are given sufficient skills in the ECEN curriculum such that they are prepared to meet all objectives, ECEN has tabulated required and elective courses and their contribution to each objective. | Ongoing. | |
| The assessment committee will generate and assess an annual alumni survey to be given both on-line and through the ECEN newsletter. This survey will target programmatic weaknesses perceived by practicing engineers. This will be in conjunction with the survey administered by the University Assessment Office. | Ongoing. | |
| Surveys faculty opinion of student preparation, student professionalism, and if the course had adequate support and facilities. | Ongoing. | |
| Number of students in the program, semesters to graduate, areas of specialization. | Ongoing |
